It is a known fact that antioxidants help to protect our health. It is for example recommended to eat at least 5 portions of vegetables and fruit a day as part of a varied diet.
Antioxidants are actually protective substances which neutralise free radicals in our body. These free radicals are elements we produce on our own. Only when there are too many of them do they attack our body cells and may even damage them. This may have nasty consequences.
Vegetables and fruit are the best known sources of antioxidants. Recent studies have shown time and again that antioxidants also occur in honey. Not only because of the vitamins and minerals found in honey. But also and especially because of the flavonoids and polyphenols, which appear to be bioactive components with an antioxidant effect.
It is therefore important to maintain a varied diet which contains these essential antioxidants. And every little helps. Such as fruit and vegetables on a daily basis and honey on a regular basis.
