 The bee sting

As you know, bees can sting.  Or rather: the worker bees can sting, as they have a sting in their abdomen.  This sting is like a kind of needle injected into your skin.

Bees are normally not aggressive, but they may sting under certain circumstances.  For example when you start swatting at them.

They can sting only once, because they die afterwards. This is because the barbed sting remains in your skin.

When the bee flies off, the sting is ripped from the body of the worker bee and she dies.

The sting contains a little bit of venom and this can end up in the wound in your skin.

Is a bee sting dangerous?

Normally not. If you can remove the sting from your skin without venom flowing into the wound, nothing happens.  If the venom does flow into the wound, you will develop a red swelling and this may hurt a bit.  In some rare cases people become ill.
