 Pollen info

What is it?

Pollen consists of the male reproductive cells of flowers and plants. Bees collect this pollen as food concentrate for themselves and for the young larvae.  Partially because worker bees eat so much pollen, they can produce royal jelly.
Pollen looks like colourful grains ready to be eaten. Under the microscope a certain pattern is revealed, so that the pollen grain is, as it were, a fingerprint of the flower of origin. As most pollen originates from different flowers, the grains all have a different colour.

 What is it composed of?

Apart from 30% carbohydrates, pollen mainly consists of proteins, half of which in the form of amino acids, which our body badly needs but is unable to produce on its own.  A spoonful of pollen a day (30g) meets our daily need of amino acids.
Pollen furthermore contains all kinds of vitamins, minerals and antibiotic substances.  The latter act as bactericide in the intestinal flora.  Both in case of diarrhoea and constipation.
For this reason the diet of many sportsmen includes pollen.  Some hay fever patients also benefit from the use of pollen.
