MELI now extracts energy from the sun: 2 905 m² of solar panels for green electricity
On the roof of the premises, MELI has placed an installation of sun power:
- 1.750 panels form 1 big panel of 2 905 m² on a roof surface of 8 000 m².
- This is also one of the biggest installations in Belgium till now (currently Top 5 of the cubic capacity in Belgium).
- With solar panels, Meli has a guaranteed yield of 340 000 kWh/year (thisis guaranteed by Azur Solar, who placed the installation).
- These panels have an efficiency of 14 %, this means that 14 % of all the light that falls on the panels, is transformed into electricity.
- 340.000 kWh/year= 50 à 60% of the total year consumption of Meli.
- Start of the installation: December 2007: immediat yield, termination of the installation beginning of April 2008.
- Efficient use of our buffer capacity (of our production energy) in our cooling.
Investment in green energy
For this project, with a guaranteed yearly yield of 340 000 kWh ‘green electricity’, or an average consumption of some 115 households, Meli invested 1 736 000€.
The electricity is used immediately. The project is ludicrace, also because we received 'greenstreem-certificates' of our government.
Always good weather of green power
The cells make sure that Meli can count on green power the year through.
- In winter…
- In summer the installation makes a high yield because of more hours of light. Also ligth falls on the panels in a straight angle, which improves the yield.
- Of the 100 % energy we get from the sun, 42 % is in summer, 25 % in autumn, 8 % in winter and 25 % in spring.
The installation of solar panels also diminishes the CO2-discharge with 106 tonnes a year.

This project with solar panels fits in with the global environmental policy of MELI.
